In-mold labeling and decorating event adds in-mold electronics to portfolio

In-mold electronics reduces the need for secondary operations by integrating installation of electronics into the injection molding process.

For more than two decades, AWA Alexander Watson Associates (Amsterdam) has been a leading source for advances related to in-mold labeling (IML) and in-mold decorating (IMD) through IMLCON and IMDCON. This year, it is adding In-Mold Electronics (IMECON) to its portfolio: The all new three-in-one In-Mold Conference will be held September 10 and 11, 2018, at the Novotel Hotel in Amsterdam.

Keeping pace with this growing technology is critical to the success of mold manufacturers and molders that serve a range of industries including consumer packaging, automotive, recreational, lawn and garden equipment and many more. 

Mold manufacturers and molders need to know many aspects of the in-mold technology including how labels are becoming the brand owner’s interactive communication tool with consumers and a differentiator on crowded shelves. IML also represents a “green” innovation that allows labels to be recycled with the bottle/container. 

IMD is more than just a decoration—it’s a permanent safety or instruction label required by regulatory agencies. IMD provides brand-recognition colors and unique features while providing cost savings to OEMs through technologies such as film insert molding used for exterior parts in the automotive sector.

IME reduces the need for secondary operations by allowing the installation of electronics to become an inherent part of the injection molded plastic component. For products that require electronics in components, IME has become the next big thing in in-mold technology.

Mold manufacturers are the front line for successful in-mold technology. The mold must be designed from the get-go for in-mold technology. Collaborative efforts with the molding machine supplier and automation supplier/integrator and especially with the molder are a must when helping OEM customers successfully implement IML, IMD or IME.
