Korean suppliers targets commercial POE/POP supply in 2014

The ethylene-octene copolymer POPs will primarily target heat-seal layer and polypropylene injection molded part modification applications. Medical applications are also under consideration. The POEs, meanwhile, will target PP injection molded part modification, wire and cable encapsulation, and footwear foam, among others. SK Global is constructing a 200,000-tonnes/yr facility for the resins, for which samples are currently available.

Fellow Korean supplier LG Chem (Seoul) already boasts 90,000 tonnes/yr of capacity for POEs, mainly used as impact modifiers. Another POE application currently popular is sports shoe mid-soles where the POE is blended typically in a ratio of 60–80% EVA/20–40% POE. This is carried out as a cost saving measure given current high prices for EVA foam grades.—[email protected]
