Using two of the industry's largest trade shows as launch pads, the films processing business unit of plastics and chemicals supplier ExxonMobil Chemical next month will introduce two new oriented polypropylene (OPP) film grades for pressure-sensitive label applications. Marketed under the Label-Lyte moniker, the labels are designed to comply with EU directives limiting the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC) during manufacture.

Label converters offered new ‘Lyte’ options

ExxonMobil Chemical's films business is a leading processor of oriented polypropylene (OPP) films for flexible packaging and labeling applications. The two new label film grades will be officially introduced next month, first at LabelExpo Americas 2010 (Sept. 14-16) and then at Pack-Expo (Oct. 31-Nov. 3), with both events held in Chicago.

Both new grades are two-side coated, multilayer, biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) label facestock. Label-Lyte 50LL539 is clear, while Label-Lyte 60LH538 is a white, cavitated film.

These new films' ink receptivity will help converters shorten the time needed for startup runs. The coated print surface of both grades enhances ink adhesion and press performance, while offering printability with water-based and solvent-based flexo and gravure ink systems, as well as with other ink systems. Throughout the industry there is a move away from dry lamination processes that employ solvents containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The print surface also is compatible with hot and cold foil stamping systems. The coated adhesive-receiving surface provides pressure-sensitive adhesion to water-based, solvent-based, hot melts, and UV-curable hot melt systems.

The clear Label-Lyte 50LL539 film is suitable for clear-on-clear applications such as beverages and health and beauty care product packaging. This film type can be used in the U.S. market in contact with most food for applications like labeling of fruit and vegetables, while the opacity of the Label-Lyte 60LH538 film makes it suitable for back side printing applications. The films are processed at Exxon Mobil Chemical facilities in the U.S. and Europe and are available globally.—[email protected]
