Molding snowboard bindings, laptop computer housings, and tray bases for a gas chromatograph out of magnesium, Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd. used an October open house at its Advanced Manufacturing Center (Bolton, ON) to roll out a revamped Hylectric Thixosystems for molding magnesium.

Accounting for the unique flow characteristics of magnesium, the injection units are capable of speeds up to 6 m/sec, and they apply Husky''s hot sprue technology. In a move symbolic of their similarities, Husky ran the magnesium machines next to ones running plastic, pointing out that the different machines share most features, and both can be easily integrated into a traditional molding facility.

The Thixosystem also features Husky''s Reflex platens, which improve tonnage utilization, reduce mold wear, and allow oversized tools thanks to wider tiebars. A hybrid machine, the Thixosystem uses a servodriven extruder that reportedly reduces dry-cycle times and provides energy efficiency.

The first Hylectric Thixosystem will be a 500-ton press with a 70-mm screw. In early 2004, Husky said it plans to release a 1000-ton Hylectric Thixosystem, which is intended to serve a variety of application needs within the automotive market.
