Akro-Plastic highlighting lightweight design at K 2016

At this year’s K Show, German manufacturer of engineering plastic compounds Akro-Plastic (Hall 06, Booth B42) has opted to focus on the highly topical theme of lightweight design, the guiding factor for the company when it comes to product development.

Based in Niederzissen, Germany, this member of the Feddersen Group -  whose services include toll compounding, material testing, project planning, and development of formulations – has expanded its Akromid Lite family (PA-based with chemically coupled PP) to include products that not only reduce weight but also deliver a range of technical enhancements to specific properties.

The product series is characterized, among other things, by low density, outstanding chemical resistance, and good adhesion to olefin-based PP types. One example is the company’s Akromid B28 LGF 40 1 L, which is one of the first polyamide blends with long glass fiber technology and excellent chemical resistance. The component on display at K2016 will demonstrate how the high-performance glass fibers used to reinforce the material provide excellent strength values at higher temperatures, with strengths exceeding those of a 50% short glass fiber-reinforced polyamide at 120°C. The company is also introducing a new highly reinforced Akromid RM grade with reduced moisture absorption, which is typically used in applications such as the fan blades shown in the above image.

The company will also be showing its carbon-reinforced compounds, among which its new Akroloy PARA ICF 40 polyamide blend, featuring extremely high strength and excellent surface finish, which will be presented for the first time at K 2016. Another grade, Akromid B3 ICF 20 1 L, allows for substantial weight reduction (comparable with non-reinforced PA) whilst delivering superb mechanical properties. Further weight reductions can be achieved using blowing agents.

"With our innovative "ICF" carbon-fiber-reinforced compounds, we have been able to realize a number of serial applications that actively contribute to lowering CO2 emissions", said Thilo Stier, Head of Sales and Innovation at Akro-Plastic.

At the show, Akro-Plastic will also be showcasing its range of compounds produced using its globally available Innovative Compounding and Extrusion (ICX) technology. Products featuring this this technology, which guarantees the high mechanical strengths required in flame-retardant products, include Akromid C3 1 FR, featuring extreme toughness (e.g., for integral film hinges) at [email protected]; Akromid C3 GF25 1 FR, featuring extreme flowability for thin walls at [email protected]; and Akromid B3 1 FR, offering low smoke gas density and low smoke gas toxicity.

Together with Plasmatreat GmbH, with whom Akro-Plastic established a system partnership in January of this year, the company will also be demonstrating the partnership’s latest innovation to achieve superior adhesive bonding between metal and plastic at Plasmatreat’s booth (Hall 11 booth G04). The demonstration will feature a stainless steel bracket integrally extruded with Akromid B3 GF 30. Arburg, KUKA, and Krallmann will also be taking part in this demonstration.
