On-Line Thickness Gage Measures Flat Web Materials

pn14-0200.jpgModel 360 Caliper Gage from NDC Infrared Engineering is an electro-mechanical unit that is said to continuously scan and measure the true (actual) thickness of extruded or calendered sheet, foamed sheet, coatings and embossed materials.

The gage consists of a hardened stainless steel reference platen that rides below the web and an aluminum oxide-coated sensor that contacts the top surface of the measured material. The distance between the reference platen and the sensor is directlyproportional to the thickness of the product.

The gage has a maximum measuring range of 0 to 200 mils (0 to 5 mm). NDC says that for most applications, the calibrated range would be a smaller part of the total range. Contact area is a 1-in. diameter circle.

In use, the upper and lower caliper heads are mounted on one or moreof the manufacturer's O-frame scanners, which are combined with an appropriate electronic console with video display or product thickness, thickness profile and web statistics.

The caliper gage can also becombined with other NDC thickness or basis weight gages, such as beta, gamma, infrared thickness or moisture and non-contact laser thickness gages.
