Albis Plastic introduces medical materials portfolio, builds dedicated production line

Albis Plastic GmbH (Hamburg, Germany), a global distributor and compounder of technical thermoplastics and thermoplastic elastomers, is expanding its product portfolio to include custom compounds for medical, pharmaceutical packaging and diagnostic applications. The products grouped under the ALCOM MED brand are based on different polymers and include both colorings and fillers, including mineral, fiberglass and barium sulfate. The company said that the move is in reaction to market developments, including changes to regulatory requirements brought about by the introduction of the new European Medical Devices Regulation.

ALCOM MED complements the existing healthcare portfolio it distributes, which includes products from longstanding partners such as LyondellBasell, INEOS Styrolution, Covestro, Eastman and Solvay, said Albis

"We are seeing a continuously growing demand from the processing industry for compounds that both comply with the regulatory requirements and offer customer-specific material solutions," commented Mike Freudenstein, Director of Marketing, Healthcare, in a prepared statement. "ALCOM MED means we can guarantee our customers production with strict quality criteria and offer close project support through our experienced healthcare specialists."

The focus goes beyond the materials’ technical properties, said Albis, to include service elements, such as consistent formulas, dedicated change management and regulatory support.

Albis also announced that it is building an entirely self-contained production line for the manufacture of ALCOM MED compounds at its Hamburg production site and plans to enhance its quality management system by implementing standards and measures in line with applicable quality management systems for medical products.

The investment will enable Albis to be flexible even with small quantities while also being able to deliver worldwide, added Freudenstein.
