Materials supplier Avient unveiled a new line of biocompatible PEEK pre-colored compounds and colorants yesterday at the start of the Medica 2024 trade show in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The new line is part of Avient’s Colorant Chromatics Transcend portfolio of materials, which are designed specifically for healthcare applications and tested to the ISO 10993 biocompatibility standard.

Applications include surgical robots

Applications suited for these materials include dental scalers, surgical robots, medical stock and shapes, and portable cardiac monitoring devices. The new materials endure repeated sterilization and use while retaining their color.

Avient’s Transcend healthcare colorants can withstand up to 1,000 autoclave cycles and sterilization to 150°C, the company said. Colors are available as transparent or opaque pre-color formulations or concentrates, as well as custom formulations with functional additives.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is heat- and chemical-resistant, and exhibits strong mechanical properties and dimensional stability. Avient’s new materials accommodate injection molding and extrusion processes.

A flexible, reliable material

"Our new Transcend Biocompatible PEEK pre-colored compounds can provide healthcare manufacturers with the flexibility and reliability they need to produce high-quality medical devices," said Deborah Sondag, global marketing manager for colorant chromatics at Avient. "By offering a solution that combines performance with aesthetics, we are helping our customers enhance the functionality and appeal of their products."
