Evansville, IN–based Berry Global Group, a leading plastic packaging supplier, plans to establish a new manufacturing site and center of excellence in Bangalore, India. The facility, which will specialize in healthcare products and packaging, will be located near Berry’s existing operation in Bangalore. Construction is expected to begin later this year, with the site validated and ready for production by summer 2023.

India and South Asia are among the fastest growing global healthcare markets, and the new facility will increase Berry’s ability to supply the region. Sectors in which the company expects to scale up production include ophthalmic, nasal pumps, inhalation, and injectable administration. The facility will also extend Berry’s R&D expertise.

“Investing in our global healthcare business in Bangalore is a significant step in supporting our pharmaceutical, over-the-counter, and medical-device customers aligned to forecasted market needs,” said Tom Salmon, Berry Global’s Chairman and CEO, in a prepared statement. “During the pandemic, we’ve learned that strategically placed facilities across the world provide efficient localized support for customers of any size. We believe this investment significantly benefits the India and South Asia patient populations.”

Work at the new facility’s dedicated R&D center of excellence will focus on inhalation devices, including models that incorporate digital technology; next-generation injectable devices; nasal and ophthalmic spray pumps; and healthcare packaging. Design criteria will include easy, user-friendly medication dosing and administration.

Development work will also address customers’ sustainability goals. Berry’s existing Bangalore facility is International Sustainability and Carbon Certificate (ISCC) Plus accredited, enabling the company to sell ISCC-certified packaging and plastic components and participate in a circular economy based on advanced recycling and mass balance.

According to the company, its existing healthcare facility in Bangalore is the market leader in ophthalmic and child-resistant closures in India. That facility opened in 2009.
