The Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA) have celebrated achievements in medical product design and engineering since 1998. Competition organizer Informa Markets – Engineering, which also produces PlasticsToday, has announced that it is now accepting submissions for the MDEA 2021 program. Interested? Good, and here’s a reason not to procrastinate: If you enter by Nov. 20, 2020, you will get a $50 discount on the entry fee.

A panel of experts comprising clinicians, engineers, and designers will evaluate products in 11 categories, including cardiovascular devices, implant and tissue replacement products, and drug-delivery systems. You can review all of the categories on the MDEA website.

Past winners represent a who’s who of medical technology innovation, including Boston Scientific, Medtronic, Zimmer Biomet, and Abbott. And it's germane to note here that plastics have played a significant role in the design and fabrication of many winning devices. Find out more in this article from PlasticsToday describing some past finalists, “How Plastics Are Shaping Medical Design Excellence.”

The winners will be announced at a digital event in the spring of 2021. A reception for the finalists and winners will be held at the co-located MD&M West/PLASTEC West tradeshow and conference in Anaheim, CA, in August.
