Formlabs Launches Six New SLA-Compatible Resins

Formlabs announced today the introduction of six new materials compatible with its Form 3, Form 3B, and Form 2 stereolithography (SLA) 3D printers. The resins support a range of industries and use cases within those industries, ranging from healthcare to manufacturing, said Formlabs. They include a new family of flexible and elastic resins for engineering, product design and manufacturing; a new line of biocompatible resins for healthcare applications; and resins for dental use.

Flexible and elastic resins

The new family of flexible and elastic resins allow manufacturers to replace outsourcing and molding of silicone, urethane, and rubber parts in order to reduce long turnaround times and additional labor, explained Formlabs. The resins make it possible to produce flexible parts in-house within hours, and are suited for consumer goods, prototyping, robotics features, and special effects props and models.

The Flexible 80A resin is a reformulation of the company’s current flexible resin (V2). It is the stiffest soft-touch material in Formlab’s portfolio of flexible and elastic resins and has an 80A Shore durometer that simulates the flexibility of rubber or TPU. Flexible 80A resin can withstand bending, flexing, and compression in repeated cycles. Applications include handles, overmolds, seals, gaskets, masks, shock absorption parts, and cartilage, tendon and ligament anatomy.

Elastic 50A resin is a new name for the company’s existing Elastic resin. With a 50A Shore durometer material, it is Formlab’s softest engineering resin. It is suitable for prototyping parts normally produced with silicone. Applications include wearables, compressible buttons, stretchable enclosures, and soft-tissue anatomy.

Biocompatible resins

BioMed Clear is a strong, hard resin for applications requiring long-term skin or mucosal membrane contact. The material is certified to USP Class VI and is suitable for applications that require wear resistance and low water absorption over time. Parts printed with BioMed Clear withstand most common sterilization methods. The resin is manufactured in Formlabs’ ISO 13485–certified facility and is supported with an FDA Device Master File. Applications include medical devices and device components; jigs and fixtures; surgical planning and implant sizing tools; and drug-delivery devices.

BioMed Amber is a rigid material for biocompatible applications requiring short-term skin or mucosal membrane contact. Parts printed with BioMed Amber resin are compatible with common solvent disinfection and sterilization methods. The resin also is manufactured in Formlabs’ ISO 13485 facility. Applications include medical devices and device components; surgical planning and implant sizing tools; and implant guides and drilling templates.

Dental resins

In order to further improve its Dental LT Clear resin, Formlabs said that it brought development in-house to fully reformulate the material. The second-generation, long-term biocompatible material for splints and occlusal guards is durable and fracture-resistant. The color-corrected material prints clear, polishes to high optical transparency, and resists discoloration over time.

Custom Tray resin is a new material developed in-house for direct printing of custom trays used to take accurate, definitive impressions. It is ideal for crowns and bridges, implants, dentures, and comprehensive cases, said Formlabs. This fast printing resin creates one tray in less than an hour, reducing labor time and enabling higher throughput.

Temporary CB resin is designed for direct printing of temporary crowns, bridges, inlays, onlays, and veneers. Available in four VITA shades, it was developed in partnership with Bego, a specialist in the field of prosthodontics and implant dentistry, and was enabled through a million-dollar investment to establish an FDA-registered, ISO 13485–certified facility with ISO Class 8 cleanroom. This durable resin can produce up to seven unit bridges and temporary restorations for up to 12 months. The digital workflow supports a collaborative process among the dental technician, dentist, and patient.
