How ‘green’ are your glasses? API, EMS-Grivory partner to develop more sustainable eyewear

Italian company API (Mussolente), which specializes in the production of thermoplastic elastomeric compounds and bioplastics, announced today its partnership with EMS-Grivory (Domat/Ems, Switzerland), a supplier of high-performance polymers and structural materials for the eyewear industry. The objective is to develop sustainable eyewear that has a lower environmental impact than currently available products.

Demand to combine soft elastomeric compounds with hard substrates has been on the rise, according to a press release distributed by Trinseo (Berwyn, PA), a global materials supplier that acquired API in July 2017.  Engineers from API and EMS-Grivory will pool their expertise to combine adhesion-modified, soft-touch thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) with stiffer polyamides branded as EMS Grilamid TR and Grilamid BTR. The adhesive properties will be engineered to comply with the VDI 2019 standard, which specifies a test method for assessing the adhesive strength and calculate the peel strength of TPE on substrates. Both companies will work on the development of solutions based on fossil fuel and renewable sources.

“We are excited to partner with EMS-Grivory as we focus our combined expertise serving a broader and greener product range,” said Giancarlo Busa, Business Unit Manager, Footwear & Sporting Goods, API. “Our materials will [provide] social, economic and environmental benefits, without imposing performance limitations. We strongly believe in the future of innovative and sustainable solutions for eyewear,” added Busa.
