The 2019 winners of the Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA) were revealed last night during a ceremony at Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) East in New York. The premier awards program for the medtech industry, the MDEA recognizes the technological achievements of medical device manufacturers across nine product categories. In addition, the winners of the Best in Show and Readers’ Choice of sister brand MD+DI categories were announced at the event, which is co-located with PLASTEC East.
“Thanks to the companies and individuals who are committed to designing products that aim to improve the quality of healthcare delivery and accessibility. The advances the medtech industry has seen this year are truly amazing,” said Daphne Allen, Editor in Chief of MD+DI. “We are thrilled to honor the organizations and individuals responsible for advancing the field.”
The MDEA program accept entries from companies and individuals involved in the design, engineering, manufacturing or distribution of finished medical devices. Winners are chosen by a panel of jurors made up of clinicians, engineers and designers who narrow down the product submissions to a maximum of six finalists in each category. From there, jurors award a bronze, silver, and gold award in each category, as well as select an overall best-in-show winner.

This year’s best-in-show award went to the Ceribell Rapid Response EEG. As reported in MD+DI, the device consists of a disposable headband and mobile recorder that acquires and transmits data to a HIPAA-compliant cloud portal, where a specialist can review the patient's EEG from anywhere.
“From my perspective as an engineer, this technology has made a huge impact in how to rapidly be able to diagnose and treat seizures,” Brad Bachedler, Principal Engineer at Ceribell, told MD+DI. “Currently it takes hours or longer for a clinician to treat it, so the time for treatment is really compressed.”

The co-located MD&M East and PLASTEC East event runs through June 13 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York.
