Medical Design Excellence Awards 2014: And the gold goes to ALung Technologies

Critical-Care and Emergency Medicine Products

Gold: The Hemolung RAS extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal system from ALung Technologies (Pittsburgh, PA) is described by the company as the world's first fully integrated system for respiratory dialysis. Removing carbon dioxide and delivering oxygen directly to the blood, the device is designed to be used as an alternative or as a supplement to mechanical ventilation in cases of acute respiratory failure. Investors apparently are as enthused about the technology as the Medical Design Excellence Awards judges: ALung Technologies raised $10 million from investors in May 2014 to accelerate sales of the artificial lung device across Europe and other parts of the world. The device is currently approved for use in 29 countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia/Pacific.

Silver: Arkon, Spacelabs Healthcare

Bronze: Isolibrium, Stryker Medical
