Medical Design Excellence Awards 2014: And the gold goes to ENT

Drug Delivery Devices and Combination Products

Gold: Propel and Propel Mini dissolvable steroid-releasing implants, manufactured by ENT (Menlo Park, CA), reduce the need for additional surgical procedures and for oral steroids for patients suffering from chronic sinusitis. According to the company, the implants are the first and only drug-eluting stents for this condition. The implants release mometasone furoate, a steroid with anti-inflammatory properties, directly into the sinus lining and then dissolve. In January 2014, Intersect ENT was named one of "America's Most Promising Companies" by Forbes magazine. The fact that medtech giant Medtronic is among the company's investors almost certainly gave it a leg up.

Silver: Debioject, Debiotech S.A.

Bronze: Auvi-Q, Sanofi
