The path to success for Jim Taylor, owner of Moldworx LLC in Gilbert, AZ, is paved with innovation and outside-the-box thinking. Last Friday, Oct. 5, Taylor and Moldworx received the excellence in innovation award from the Arizona Manufacturers Council at its annual Manufacturing Day Summit seminar and luncheon, which attracted approximately 500 attendees.

The awards luncheon recognizes outstanding Arizona manufacturers in four categories: Small/medium manufacturers, excellence in sustainability, excellence in innovation and manufacturer of the year. The Arizona Manufacturers Council is the state affiliate of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM).
In a telephone interview, Taylor told PlasticsToday that Moldworx received the award for a unique overmolding process for medical needles. “We’ve developed a number of unique processes around these overmolded needles, including automation,” Taylor explained. “We mold some straight, standard injection needles; some with S bends in them to help guide a fiber; and some U channel needles. We’re looking at a project now in which the finished needle diameter is 0.008 inches. It’s a fairly unique space as far as molding and moldmaking goes, but a lot of companies want to replace the gluing process with overmolding, which has given us some good opportunities.”
Moldworx operates from two facilities located in Gilbert. The moldmaking shop is in a 6,400-square-foot building that also serves as the company headquarters. The company’s molding facility is 8,700 square feet and houses six injection molding presses from 80 to 400 tons. Each facility has 15 employees. Moldworx serves the medical, construction, agricultural and pharmaceutical markets.
Taylor said he’s trying to drive the company in the direction of unique components requiring overmolded technology. “A lot of people do what we do, but we encountered a couple of difficult overmolded needle projects that others failed at and we were successful, so I want to focus on that technology and build more business around that.”
