MTD Micro Molding recently doubled its cleanroom manufacturing space as part of an expansion that grew the footprint of its Charlton, MA, facility from 11,700 to 27,450 square feet. The contract molder serving the micro-medical device market also added a new tooling department, more material storage, a new conference space, additional offices, and a fitness center for employees.

The company first announced expansion plans in 2017 to accommodate its fast-growing medical micro-molding business. In 2019, MTD unexpectedly lost its president, Dennis Tully, who was leading the building expansion project. In his honor, MTD said that it carried on Tully’s vision and completed the project on schedule, despite setbacks from the COVID-19 pandemic.

A single-source supplier, MTD performs all micro-molding services in-house in a controlled environment. The vertically integrated company manufactures tooling on site and has developed particular expertise in micro-molding bioabsorbable and drug-delivery devices, said the company.

The expansion allows MTD to improve logistics for custom packaging and assembly services, which are increasingly in demand, according to the company. “The days of bulk packing tiny medical parts are becoming a thing of the past. Custom packaging solutions are becoming a requirement for medical OEMs,” explained Vice President Gary Hulecki.

At a time when many businesses are worried about their future, Hulecki admits that he does have one concern with this expansion project. “Our fear is that we will grow out of this expansion at the rate of growth we’re seeing.”
