Norwood Medical, a provider of outsourced medical manufacturing services, broke ground March 14 on the construction of the 11th building at its Dayton, OH, headquarters.

When completed in 2024, the new 72,000-square-foot facility will increase Norwood’s current 650,000-square-foot footprint in Dayton by 11%. Built on an undeveloped parcel of land, the plant will be dedicated to the production of components for minimally invasive and robotic surgical devices.

The expansion will enable Norwood to increase capabilities for laser-based processing, automation, and artificial intelligence. The new facility will support Norwood’s strategic goal of producing 35 million parts per year. The expansion will have little impact on its plastics processing capabilities because parts in the new building will be made from metal-based materials, the company told PlasticsToday.

The company expects to hire an additional 100 workers to support this latest expansion. Norwood now has 1,230 employees at its Dayton campus, which includes manufacturing, research and development, customer support, logistics, finance, sales, and administrative personnel.

Dr. Frank Stietz, President of Norwood Medical, said, “This latest expansion allows us to do even more to fulfill our mission to help deliver medical technology breakthroughs that improve patient care and treatment outcomes. Second, our growth and expansion means more jobs for Dayton. We intend to make Norwood a world leader in medical technology innovation here in Dayton, and this groundbreaking is an important step in that effort.”

Dayton Mayor Jeffrey Mims, who attended the groundbreaking, said, “Norwood Medical continues to be a thriving and longstanding anchor in our city. Norwood’s constant growth and expansion in northeast Dayton is both exciting and welcomed. The expansion represents its commitment to investing in Dayton and the growing need for reliable medical device suppliers throughout the medical industry. I’m thankful for the partnership and look forward to supporting [Norwood’s] growth in our community.”

Norwood Medical has invested in eight separate construction projects since 2005 at its Dayton campus to support growth:

  • Building 3, the first addition to the campus, was constructed in 2005;

  • building 4 was constructed in 2008;

  • buildings 5 and 6 were added in 2011;

  • building 7 was added in 2012;

  • building 8 was completed in 2016;

  • building 9 was added in 2018;

  • building 10, the latest addition, was completed in November of 2021.

Norwood Medical has more than 40 years of experience in contract medical device manufacturing, with advanced capabilities to produce complex medical devices and implants. The company is vertically integrated and focuses on advancing orthopedic care. It manufactures medical devices for arthroscopic and spinal procedures, trauma surgery, and joint reconstruction. Germany’s Heraeus Group acquired Norwood Medical in December 2021. Heraeus also owns revalyu Resources, which is building a $50 million PET bottle recycling facility in Statesboro, GA.
