PEEK-based biomaterial named one of best spine technologies of 2018

Micro-porous hydrophilic polyetheretherketone (PEEK) technology developed by medical polymers company DiFusion Inc. (Austin, TX) has been named one of the top 10 spine technologies of 2018 by Orthopedics This Week. ZFUZE PEEK Composite received the recognition because it supports bony in-growth in orthopedic implants while retaining the mechanical properties and imaging capabilities of traditional PEEK. Described as a new biomaterial capable of being injection molded, 3D printed or machined, ZFUZE is currently being scaled up for commercial launch in early 2019.

While porous metal and porous-metal-coated PEEK implants have been used for some time in spine fusion applications, ZFUZE is distinguished by a negative-charged, micro-porous, hydrophilic surface. The material accommodates surface treatments such as laser etching and nano-surfacing in any form, said Derrick Johns, founder and CEO of DiFusion, "thereby giving the platform a broad range of clinical and financial advantages for potential strategic partners."

ZFUZE was considered a viable recipient of this year's Spine Technology Award because of the extensive animal research that has been conducted, noted a press release from the company. Results of the studies will be presented the North American Spine Society meeting on September 27, 2018, in Los Angeles.

DiFusion has developed multiple internationally patented metallic ion therapeutic agent (MITA) technologies for bone growth, tissue regeneration, antimicrobial, cellular repair, scaffold construction and increased angiogenesis. ZFUZE is the company’s first product.
