Injection molding powered by artificial intelligence (AI) will be in the spotlight at the Hirate America booth (#3911), where LS Mtron will demo its AI Molding Assistant and Smart Weight Control products.
The AI Molding Assistant is described as a condition-derivation system that accelerates the initial molding setup process by learning from the behavior of molding specialists via AI technology. It “learns” optimal conditions when the initial molding process is established for new molded products. Once programmed, it can set and repeat the optimized molding process with limited operator intervention.
"Because the system learns and imitates the pre-set optimal molding conditions, it can implement consistent processes regardless of the machine operator’s work proficiency,” said Peter Gardner, Business Director at LS Mtron Injection Molding Machine North America. The system can also improve cycle times. “A recent lab test at LS Mtron showed that operators who used the AI Molding Assistant were able to set up the optimal conditions for good products 23% faster on average than highly skilled operators who did not use the system,” added Gardner.
Smart Weight Control, also being demonstrated at the Plastec West booth, detects weight changes in products using the machine’s software and alters processing conditions in real time to correct deviations.
By calibrating product weight fluctuations using the Smart Weight Control system, it’s possible to reduce product defects, said LS Mtron. Issues that occur due to injection pressure fluctuations or resin and compound inconsistencies can be corrected automatically. While the new Smart Weight Control features use the machine’s software to calculate weight differentials, a real-time part weight scale can be added to feed actual part weight back into the machine’s AI system, further increasing precision.
