Raumedic launches $32 million medical expansion

Raumedic AG, which developed the first CE-certified, fully implantable wireless medical product that can measure cranial pressure through the skin, is significantly expanding manufacturing capacity in medical plastics at its headquarters in Bavaria, Germany.

The company is investing €26 million ($32.2 million) in a new building with cleanroom production and manufacturing facilities as well as laboratory and office spaces. Final completion is scheduled for 2014.

In a press release, Raumedic said that its sales and employee figures have more than doubled since its spin-off from REHAU AG & Co in 2004. "New contracts for well-known medical technology and pharmaceutical firms together with the implementation of new technologies have provided the cornerstones for our growth plans," says Martin Bayer, director at Raumedic.

Over 100 new jobs for office and laboratory staff in addition to more than 90 plant jobs will be created in the new building that will be located right next to the head office. Thirty-two job vacancies are currently posted on the company's website.

Principal plastics processing activities at the company are thermoplastic and silicone injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming and assembly. Products include tubing, precision molded components and catheters as well as assemblies and systems such as high-precision pressure measuring systems with microchip technology for the specific indications of neuromonitoring, urology, gastroenterology and traumatology.

Raumedic has a staff of some 530 employees and generated sales of €78.8 million euros ($100.8 million) last year. It was founded in 1948 as Rehau Plastiks GmbH (today REHAU AG + Co.) One of its milestones came in 2001 when it installed a quadruple micro extrusion plant for extruding tubing with up to four layers with thicknesses of ≥ 0.005mm.
