Trinseo highlights medical-grade PS and ABS at Medica trade show

Fresh from K 2016, Trinseo (Berwyn, PA) is back in Düsseldorf, Germany, this week exhibiting at Compamed, the supplier showcase co-located with Medica, the world’s largest medical technology trade show. The global materials company and manufacturer of plastics, latex binders and synthetic rubber will highlight its medical-grade styrenes as well as its Magnum ABS resins and Emerge advanced resins that provide medical device OEMs with the means to achieve lightweighting, aesthetic, durability and cost-reduction objectives. The company is exhibiting on stand L39 in hall 8B.

Trinseo’s newest plastic, Styron 2678 MED polystyrene resin, is a general-purpose polystyrene that combines the versatility of the material with the assurance of biocompatibility and a three-year extended notification of change. The polymer is suited for clear packaging, diagnostic components, petri dishes and test kit housings.

The Magnum ABS resins, which were also featured at the K show, and Emerge products are suited for applications such as single- and multiple-use drug-delivery devices and equipment housings. ABS offers the advantage of mass polymerization technology, which results in lower residual monomers, purity, whiteness and lot-to-lot consistency, said Trinseo. At K 2016, the company announced that it would begin production of Magnum ABS, which is based on a propriety process technology, in China.

Trinseo supports the medical market through its Consumer Essential Markets unit, part of its Performance Plastics business. Last month, Trinseo achieved a milestone when it became ISO 13485 certified as “manufacturer and developer of medical compounds” at its medical production facilities in Stade, Germany, and Hsinchu, Taiwan, and also in ancillary functions including research and development, technical service and development, sales, quality and procurement. This certification indicates Trinseo’s commitment to the medical device business and its strategic alignment with its customers’ objectives, said the company in a press release.

Earlier this year the company introduced a new production and fulfillment model featuring custom medical compounding in Asia Pacific complementing medical compounding in North America and Europe. These facilities are sourced with polycarbonate base resins from Trinseo’s high-quality, medically equivalent resins produced in Germany and also by its joint venture partner, Sumika Styron Polycarbonate Ltd., in Japan.
