UFP expands barrier packaging portfolio for medical devices

UFP Technologies (Newburyport, MA) has expanded its FlexShield product line to include sterile barrier integrity protection for most medical devices. A producer of custom-engineered components, UFP serves the medical, automotive, aerospace, defense, electronics, consumer, and industrial markets.

FlexShield is made from flexible, medical-grade thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) films that are USP Class VI certified, biocompatible and FDA approved. It was introduced in 2013 and has since been designed into numerous packaging and component configurations for global orthopedic implant and medical device companies, said the company.

The puncture- and abrasion-resistant product is suited for protecting a range of medical devices and implants such as fixation plates, hip stems, surgical screws, trocars and surgical saw blades.

“We’ve seen an increasing number of uses for FlexShield, as more medical devices are shipped sterile,” said Tom Fitzgerald, Product Manager. Currently available FlexShield products include ergonomically designed pouches that allow medical personnel easy access to devices; tip protectors for sharp or delicate medical instruments; and bags with an extra layer of protection to ensure sterile barrier integrity.

FlexShield also can be formed into unique shapes to accommodate a range of devices. The material is approved for skin contact and has been used to protect patients from infection during surgery and to safeguard sensitive medical equipment.

Current applications include sterile barrier integrity protection for medical equipment; surgical aids for infection prevention; robotic components; and orthopedic implant sleeves.
