A horizontal, five-axis machining center that can grind, drill, bore, and mill? What would you call it? Makino (Mason, OH) calls its version the G5. Tim Jones, Makino?s product manager of horizontal machining centers, says the G5?s biggest advantage is its ability to zero out time that doesn?t add value.

It?s a full five-axis machine with a 60-tool automatic tool changer. The G5 can hold up to an 8.7-inch-diameter grinding wheel, and has a novel two-axis coolant nozzle that allows it to accommodate variations in wheel diameter and changes in cutting direction while maintaining ideal cutting conditions.

For added reliability, the G5 features one-piece X, Y, and Z covers, proven 1-Series tool changing systems, and 10-µm cyclonic secondary filtration. The G5 is equipped with features to ensure thermal stability, such as an integral spindle with the cooling jacket linked to the bed temperature, and a number of features, not the least of which is its stepped column construction, provide rigidity and speed.?CK
