Need to weld plastics? There’s an app for that, too!

Apps for B2B information in the plastics industry are coming on strong, with molders able to access more technical help than ever before. Sonics & Materials Inc., specialists in ultrasonic technology and manufacturer of assembly equipment for over 45 years, has announced the launch of their free mobile app to make it easy to identify the optimal weld process for a specific thermoplastic material. This new interactive tool for plastics assembly and welding applications helps the user match a large range of thermoplastic materials, and to find hand-held welding tip specifications for spot welding, staking and insertion processes.

Sonics_App_phone_image.jpegTo identify the best weld process for a specific plastic material, the user just selects whether the material is amorphous or crystalline and then clicks on the material, such as "ABS/Polycarbonate," to view whether the process of spot welding, conventional welding, staking/swaging and/or inserting are excellent, good, fair, poor or not suitable for that material.

To find the compatibility of thermoplastic materials, the user selects a material from the menu, such as "Acrylic Multi-Polymer," to view the other materials with which it is compatible. Finding hand-held welding tips for staking requires the user to select a post type and a boss diameter, then view the recommended high and low profile tip sizes.

In addition to the interactive tools, the app also provides overviews as well as more detailed information on welding processes, applications and equipment, plus a handy reference for OEM systems' integrators and special machinery builders. There are also videos and a search feature, said Sonics.

The Sonics & Materials App also provides user-friendly navigation and simple menus to make it easy to find information on particular plastics joining applications, from the best welding processes to the most compatible materials.

The app is available in both Android and Apple platforms, and can be found on Google Play and iTunes per the QR codes provided or at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sonics or https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sonics/id910903386?ls=1&mt=8
