New additive plant planned as plastics development in Middle East continues

Plastics and additives supplier BASF announced it would build a new plant for customer specific antioxidant blends in the Middle East. When operational by the end of 2012, the plant will be one of the largest for these plastic additives in the world with annual capacity of about 16,000 tonnes.

BASF (Ludwigshafen, Germany) supplies antioxidants and process stabilizers, light stabilizers, flame retardants and pigments. The company expanded its plastic additives and pigments portfolio in 2009 with its acquisition of the plastics additives business of Ciba.

Construction of the new facility in Bahrain will start in September 2011. Hans Reiners, president of BASF's Performance Chemicals division, notes the significance of building the new antioxidants facility close to many of the supplier's key accounts. "We are very happy to establish a state-of-the-art CSB (customer specific antioxidant blends) production site close to our customers in this fast growing region." The company also makes these additives in Asia, Europe and the Americas. "BASF is very much committed to further strengthen its plastic additives business ranging from antioxidants and light stabilizers to pigments," added Reiners.

This new plant will come in addition to the existing manufacturing agreement for customer specific antioxidant blends with the region's largest supplier of plastic masterbatches, Astra Polymers in Saudi Arabia.
