NPE sets up recycling center on show floor

After learning that Japanese blowmolding supplier Nissei ASB would opt out of NPE2009, the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI; Washington DC) decided to use the abandoned space for a centralized recycling center. Located in the South Hall of McCormick Place, the center, which is sponsored by material-purchasing consultant RTi, gives exhibitors a show-floor location to send scrap generated by machine demonstrations at the event.

SPI partnered with recycler Maine Plastics on the center, and it’s also working with McCormick and show logistics supplier Experien, to recycle as much show-generated waste as possible, ranging from packaging waste to cutlery used at restaurants. Gene Sanders, SPI’s VP of trade shows, said a similar show-recycling effort in 2006 amongst exhibitors drew 66 participants and gathered more than 700,000 lb of plastic scrap. [email protected]
