Nypro enters into smart packaging arena with recent acquisition

During the Pack Expo Las Vegas show this week, Nypro (Clinton, MA), a healthcare & packaging division of Jabil, announced its acquisition of Spanish food and consumer packaging supplier Plasticos Castella (Tortosa, Spain) as it looks to make a strong push into the smart packaging arena. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

PlasticsToday had a chance to sit down with Nypro at the show where the company discussed how its smart packaging solutions will allow Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) brands to tackle challenges and provide new opportunities to refresh their brands and make them stand out on the retail shelf, both enhancing the consumer experience and increasing revenue growth through static, active, interactive and intelligent packages that build brand equity.

According to Nypro, static packaging uses decoration capabilities to enhance the brand marks along with barrier solutions to extend shelf life and reduce the use of preservatives. Active packaging embeds information onto packaging that can be read by smart phones and other machines. Interactive packaging creates extended protection through engineered materials and substrates that change state when exposed to environmental environments. Intelligent packaging provides dynamic Interaction with sensors on packaging, business analytics, machine learning, and supply chain integration.

The addition of Plasticos' design, engineering and manufacturing plants in Spain and Hungary to Nypro's existing plants in North America will increase latter's smart packaging capabilities.

The acquisition will expand Nypro’s footprint in Europe and allow it to take on a customer base in the food and beverage sector.

Plasticos' customers will gain access to Nypro's geographic reach and Jabil's supply chain and design and development capabilities.

Nypro Packaging President Paul Kayser said: "Smart Packaging goes beyond product differentiation to enable brand owners to achieve Brand Brilliance.

"This fast-emerging field promises to revolutionize the industry by opening new options to create packaging that is not only more practical and consumable, but also more sensory compelling, connected and intelligent.

"In addition to enhancing the customer experience, Smart Packaging will also help increase revenue and improve ROI for our customers."

Plasticos Castella, known for its strong in-mold labeling capabilities, offers plastic lids for condiments, as well as packaging design, 3D modeling and mass production solutions.

In 2013, Jabil Circuit completed the acquisition of plastic products producer Nypro for $665 million.

Nypro provides mold labeling, barrier technologies, contract assembly services and co-packing services to the consumer products, food and beverage and consumer health markets.
