Blowmolder installs first ProShape system for plastics packagingBlowmolder installs first ProShape system for plastics packaging

Plastics processor APPE is the first to install one of the ProShape stretch blow molding systems developed and marketed by beverage packaging machinery specialist Krones. ProShape is a module for alignment and responsive temperature control for out-of-the-ordinary performs, added to the established heating and stretch blowmolding technology of the manufacturer's Contiform series, to ensure even these oddball preforms are appropriately pre-conditioned.

APPE, the packaging division of LSB, invested around £1.5 million ($2.41 million) in the installation of the ProShape. This is the first ProShape installation undertaken since Krones launched the technology at last fall's K show.

The new machine is already up and running at APPE's Gresford site in the U.K., producing bottles and packaging for APPE clients in the household and personal care sectors. The new kit helps it expand beyond its traditional business of blowing bottles for fillers of carbonated soft drinks and mineral water.

ProShape, reports Krones, is especially useful for processing of oval or asymmetrical containers, as well as of ones with highly unusual designs, plus for light-weighting of oval packs. The manufacturer says machines outfitted with the ProShape module have a circa 40% higher output than standard stretch blow molding machines.

The Contiform S8 installed at APPE's Gresford plant has eight cavities, with an output of up to 2000 bottles/hr/cavity. The system can also be switched from the preferential heating and neck orientation process to a standard blowing mode for producing round bottles when required.

APPE (Artenius PET Packaging Europe ) is the former Amcor PET Packaging Europe, acquired in late 2007 by PET supplier La Seda de Barcelona. The processor operates 8 processing facilities and one for recycling PET in Europe and North Africa.
