EVOH film market forecast to grow almost 5% annually through 2028

EVOH packaging
E-commerce is expected to remain a key growth driver for EVOH films in packaging applications.

EVOH films for the packaging market are expected to grow at a healthy 4.7% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the decade 2018 to 2028, according to a newly released market study from Fact.MR (Pune, India). Demand will remain robust from the food and beverage sector, as manufacturers invest in innovative packaging technologies to appeal to a wider base of environmentally conscious consumers, the study noted. EVOH film is highly resistant to oxygen and carbon dioxide, which make it a preferred choice for packaging materials.

EVOH film remains “a pragmatic packaging solution in the food and beverage markets owing to its excellent anti-contamination properties,” said the report. One of the primary benefits of using EVOH films for packaging in these markets is the extension of shelf life.

Packaging manufacturers also continue to benefit from the rising demand for flexible packaging solutions in healthcare, personal care and cosmetics, and electronics. Leading packaging manufacturers are focusing on introducing additional functionalities of EVOH films such as cost-effectiveness and seal strength.

“Growth of the e-commerce sector is likely to remain a key growth parameter for EVOH films for the packaging market,” said a lead analyst from Fact.MR. “Along with various types of retail goods, modern consumers are favorably disposed toward the idea of purchasing perishables online, which is creating strong demand for sustainable packaging solutions. EVOH films, when used as a food packaging solution, can successfully retain properties such as flavor, freshness and aroma, preventing contamination during shipment. Leading manufacturers of EVOH films are developing innovative food packaging solutions, such as bag-in-box and pouches for liquid food products, to gain competitive advantages in the packaging market.”

Rising industrial applications of barrier packaging materials is also creating demand for raw materials with specialized properties among market players in the EVOH film packaging market. The report noted that Kuraray Co. Ltd., a Japanese manufacturer of EVOH films used in food packaging, recently acquired U.S.-based Calgon Carbon Corp. to boost the use of filtration media products in manufacturing processes to deliver high-quality and sustainable EVOH films for the packaging market.

The Smurfit Kappa Group plc, a European packing company, is focusing on the use of innovative raw materials to develop high-performance packaging solutions for the drinks market. The company recently launched its new Thermo Bag-in-Box packaging product using medium-density polyethylene, linear low-density polyethylene and EVOH film to meet the standards of hot-filling processes during the manufacture of various beverages. Smurfit used a combination of these raw materials to leverage their special properties such as thermo-resistance, flexibility and oxygen resistance to extend product life, said the report. The company has been “relentlessly developing higher performance materials for packaging to bring enhanced product quality for consumers and gain a competitive edge in the EVOH films for packaging market.”
