FDA approves non-phthalate PVC plasticizer Pevalen for food-contact applications

To meet growing global demand for the plasticizer, Perstorp (Malmo, Sweden) has entered into an agreement with Italian company Alcoplast to more than double current production capacity.

FDA has notified Perstorp Holding AB (Malmo, Sweden) that its Pevalen plasticizer for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) polymers has been deemed to be safe for repeated-use, food-contact products. The company obtained the food contact notification, FCN 001967, on May 28, 2019.

“The food contact notification will further strengthen the offer to the North American market, which we believe will be a major growth region for a product like Pevalen, as it helps flexible PVC producers design products that meet the highest national regulatory requirements, without sacrificing performance or quality,” said Jenny Klevds, Product Manager, Perstorp.

Pevalen (pentaerythritol tetravalerate or PETV) is Perstorp’s high-performance, true non-phthalate plasticizer. It is suited for sensitive applications and products that come in direct human contact, such as apparel and accessories, sport and leisure products, automotive interiors, furniture, and floors and wall coverings in homes and public spaces, said Perstorp. Pevalen features high plasticizing efficiency in combination with low migration and volatility.

“Global demand for non-phthalate plasticizers is predicted to continue to grow at about 100,000 tons per year,” said Markus Jösson, Vice President Plasticizers, Perstorp. Based on this forecast, Perstorp is substantially expanding production capacity of Pevalen. Perstorp has entered into a long-term production agreement with Italian company Alcoplast Srl to more than double current production capacity, bringing it to a total to 50,000 tons per year.
