Los Angeles-based skincare company Dermalogica is addressing the problem of nonrecyclable pumps in beauty product packaging with the launch of a recyclable, monomaterial pump on its cleanser bottles. Aptar, headquartered in Crystal Lake, IL, supplies the new pump.

“The beauty industry has a pump problem,” said Aurelian Lis, Dermalogica’s CEO, in a prepared statement. “Pumps are increasingly used but widely unsustainable. Today, we aim to fix the problem.”

Dermalogica plans to start integrating the customized pump into packaging for its Clearing Skin Wash, Special Cleansing Gel, and UltraCalming Cleanser in 2022.

The new pump, which is made solely of polyethylene, will be recyclable together with Dermalogica’s polyethylene (PE) cleanser bottles. In addition to being recyclable, the new pump uses less virgin plastic and weighs less than conventional pumps. Aptar designed the pump for use with PE and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) containers.

In contrast to conventional pumps used in skincare packaging — which incorporate an internal metal spring, rendering them nonrecyclable — the new pump features a plastic spring. The monomaterial pump aligns with Dermalogica’s goal of having 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable bottles by 2025.

The Association of Plastics Recyclers (APR) has recognized the monomaterial pump for meeting the APR Design Meets Preferred Guidance (MPG) program’s requirements. RecyClass, a European cross-industry initiative for advancing plastic packaging recyclability and harmonized recycling, has given the new pump a class “A” rating, meaning the pump’s design features guarantee the best recyclability and quality of recyclate.

Dermalogica’s executives hope the switch to a recyclable pump will not only improve the company’s environmental profile but also inspire other beauty and personal care companies.

“As the industry leader, we have an opportunity and a responsibility to make a positive impact, not just on peoples’ skin, but on the environment,” Lis said. “Being the first major skincare brand to launch these recyclable, monomaterial pumps puts pressure on other brands to follow our example and innovate on behalf of the planet.”
