The Alliance to End Plastic Waste, an international non-profit organization, welcomed five new members to its membership ranks: Amcor plc, Atlantic Packaging Co., Inter Pipeline Ltd., Kirin Holdings, and Novacel. These additions bring to 57 the number of member companies in the alliance.

“The momentum we are seeing in our membership points to a growing number of companies directing their attention to the actions they can take in ending plastic waste in the environment,” said Jacob Duer, President and CEO of the alliance. “With five new members, we welcome even more diversity into the alliance from both a membership category and geographic standpoints. We are excited to include new viewpoints and different expertise on our membership bench.”

Amcor is a global developer and producer of packaging for food, beverage, pharmaceutical, medical, home- and personal-care, and other products. Atlantic Packaging Co. specializes in end-of-line packaging systems and materials as well as paperboard and corrugated solutions. Inter Pipeline Ltd is a petroleum transportation and natural gas liquids processing business. Kirin Holdings is a global company operating in the food (alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages) and medical (pharmaceuticals) segments, as well as health sciences. Novacel, from Chargeurs group, is a company that reduces customers’ product waste by providing efficient advanced adhesive solutions.

In another announcement, the Alliance to End Plastic Waste called for project proposals that capture economic value from plastic waste. Part of its mission is to identify, accelerate, and scale solutions to help end plastic waste in the environment. The Alliance to End Plastic Waste estimates that between $80 to $120 billion of plastic packaging material value is lost to the economy every year. This represents value that can be reclaimed through recycling, which in turn can contribute to increasing collection and preventing plastic waste from leaking into the environment.

Submissions must demonstrate a large and scalable impact that will help create new market demand and improve quality for recycled plastic. As the need for action is urgent, the alliance said that it is prioritizing proposals that can reach full-scale operational capacity within three years or less.

Proposals can be submitted by public or private entities and by for-profit or not-for-profit organizations. The application period runs through July 31, 2021.
