Packaging maker and distributor Winpak has entered into a long-term agreement to use Syndigo-brand recycled PE (rPE) from Nova Circular Solutions to produce high-quality packaging materials.

Starting early next year, Nova expects to produce more than 110 million pounds of Syndigo rPE annually at its recycling facility in Connersville, IN. Winpack will use Nova’s rPE to manufacture packaging of perishable foods, beverages, and personal-care products.

Made from post-consumer recycled linear-low-density polyethylene (rLLDPE), Syndigo has earned Nova a letter of non-objection from the FDA for food-contact conditions B through H.

“This collaboration with Nova Chemicals will allow Winpak to expand our sustainable product offerings and meet the evolving needs of our customers,” said Mustafa Bilgen, vice president, technology and innovations, at Winpak. “We are excited to leverage Syndigo rLLDPE to deliver premium packaging solutions while contributing to a more circular economy.”

Winpak, using the slogan “It’s Our Nature to Protect,” specializes in flexible and rigid packaging and packaging machinery. The company has committed to fostering sustainable packaging solutions as a member of Ameripen, the Association of Plastic Recyclers, CIAC Plastics Division, PAC Global, the Polypropylene Recycling Coalition, and the Sustainable Packaging Coalition.

The agreement is the latest in Winpak’s mission toward sustainability. On Aug. 7, Winpak also announced a memorandum of understanding to purchase sustainable packaging materials, including pyrolysis-based PE and PP materials, from SK Geo Centric.

“We are pleased to continue collaborating with our long-term customer Winpak to supply premium recycled PE resins for their flexible packaging needs,” said Greg DeKunder, vice president of Nova Circular Solutions. “This agreement marks a significant step forward in delivering innovative and sustainable solutions to the flexible packaging industry for both customers and consumers. According to a recent survey, 75% of consumers agreed that companies should increase the use of packaging made from recycled materials.”
