Two leading European beverage shows will now collaborate on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) segment at their respective events. Messe München GmbH, organizer of the drinktec fair, will extend its PETpoint event, purchased from heidelberg business media GmbH in October 2009, to NürnbergMesse GmbH's Brau Beviale starting in November 2011.
PETpoint has been part of drinktec since 2005, with the last drinktec in September 2009 featuring 120 exhibitors in the PETpoint portion. Those companies covered a gross area of 11,000m², which equated to 50% more space than in 2005. Going forward, after Brau Beviale in Nürnberg from Nov. 9-11 next year, an annual cycle is planned, wherein Nürnberg will host the PETpoint every year except for the drinktec years. The next PETpoint at drinktec, which takes place in Münich every four years, will be in 2013. The 2011 PETpoint pavilion in Nürnberg will be in hall 2, with at least 30 exhibitors initially signed on for the premiere.
The show organizers said their cooperation is due in large part to the faster innovation cycle in the PET segment compared with other sectors of the beverage and liquid food industry, with one official noting that the event couldn't completely meet the needs of the PET industry given drinktec's four-year cycle. The technology boom is fed by a consumption boom. The announcement noted that a record number of more than 400 billion plastic containers were used for filling beverages worldwide in 2009, with the majority of those in PET. In Germany, for example, nearly 78% of all non-alcoholic drinks are filled in PET containers.
PETpoint has traditionally drawn from all segments of the industry, including preform manufacturers, blowmolding machinery manufacturers, recycling technology suppliers, and closure manufacturers, as well as container developers, designers, and converters.
