Plast '09-Milan: Borealis puts stop to stress cracks with new closure grades

This week’s Plast ’09 trade show in Milan is the official market launching pad for three new grades of multimodal high density polyethylene (HDPE) aimed at closure molding. The three, all supplied by Borealis, are BorPure MB6561 for still and sparkling water and carbonated soft drinks, MB6562 for carbonated soft drinks, and MB7541 for still water.

The supplier credits its multimodal PE reactor technology with supplying grades that have a higher flow than PE made on unimodal reactors, but with a similar melt flow rate so that processors—injection or compression molders--—can lessen holding pressure. The lower holding pressure leads to reduced internal stress that in turn creates a higher level of environmental stress cracking resistance (ESCR) for the finished caps. —[email protected]
