Plastic film extrusion: New generation of static eliminator introduced to North America

With winter's dry air still showing little sign of let-up, plastics film processors may be interested in a device new to the North American market that removes static in film converting, printing and other processes. The device, manufactured in Japan, is proven technology, and is used by carmaker Toyota in its worldwide factories.

Processos can choose the "Bar Type" ionizer or can pair multiple bars to create a dust-free space.

Sanyo Corporation of America (SCOA; NY, NY) has been named an official distributor for the North American market by the manufacturer of the equipment, the TRINC.ORG company of Hamamatsu, Japan. Trading company SCOA is no stranger to the film extrusion market, having supplied the polyester film market in the U.S. for more than 30 years.

Static is a problem for many printing and packaging companies, with many of them already use static eliminators. The device developed by TRINC.ORG can remove both static and dust and, significantly, it works without air blow or humidification.

Sanyo Corp. is offering two different types of device. The "Bar Type" is an ionizer that typically would be mounted to a machine, and the "Static Free Space Type" is a set of two or more bars to create a static- and dust-free space of up to 20 feet by 10 feet by 13 feet. One bar ionizer sends positive ions, the other bar ionizer sends negative ions.

Depending on the application, the space that is created can serve almost as a sort of cleanroom, but without having walls. With the auto cleaning function, the unit's needles can be cleaned remotely with a touch of a switch, making it a potential choice for use in a cleanroom where workers need to operate remotely.

The "Bar Type" device would be used, for example, to eliminate static from a compact and limited area, e.g. the winders of a slitter winder. It is vailable in two sizes and ionizes as far as two feet.

Both types are almost maintenance-free and have low power consumption, according to SCOA.
