Plastics park launches in Malaysia

Malaysia has opened a 140-hectare plastic park in Kertih, with the site launching with RM145 million ($45.4 million) in investments, including pipe and wire-and-cable businesses. Located within the East Coast Economic Region (ECER), the Kertih Plastic Park (KPP) hopes to be fully occupied by 2015, with the potential to eventually create more than 7000 jobs, according the country’s national news service, Bernama. The site hopes to exploit the nearby Kertih Integrated Petrochemical Complex’s raw materials.

Malaysia is targeting plastics products as a strong export market, with the sector growing 8.3% in the first half of 2008 and registering turnover of RM7.96 billion ($2.49 billion) in that time. Part of the Malaysian government’s drive to grow its east coast states, the ECER, which covers 66,736 sq km, launched on Oct. 29, 2007.
