'Retrofit-Ready' Medium-Voltage AC Drive Is Pre-Engineered For Fast Delivery

8.jpgABB Automation has introduced a pre-engineered, water-cooled, medium-voltage ac drive for operating pump, fan and compressor motors. The ACS 1000 drives can be connected to any standard squirrel cage motor and are said to provide precise speed and torque control in the 2500 to 6500 hp range, in voltages of 2.3, 3.3 and 4.16kv.

Drives are built with IGCT (Integrated Gate Commutated Thyristor) power switching modules on a swing-out inverter stack, which means fewer parts and a small footprint. The stack is easy to access for maintenance and replacement of switching modules.

The drive is also said to have a clean output. The IGCT switching technology, combined with a sine filter, is said to create a very clean sinusoidal output voltage waveform to the motor, with less than 1% total harmonic distortion. A low harmonic is said to increase drive motor efficiency and to save energy.

The drives share the same motor control platform, the same communications buses and the same operator interface as other ABB standard drives. Units have an on-board library of application macros for configuration of inputs, outputs, signal processing and other parameters. Application macros include hand/auto, sequential control, torque control, factory-set and PID setpoint control.

Windows-based software and other tools ease start-up, programming, commissioning and maintenance.

A lower price (compared to similar drives) is also claimed, due to the fact that the engineering investment is spread across a large customer base, rather than added to each order. Add the energy savings, and ABB says typical payback time is one to five years.
