376 days out, NPE2012 neared 2009 floor-space levels

With only 376 days left until the show, NPE2012 had attracted 813 exhibiting companies covering 754,000-ft2. John Effmann, chairman of the NPE2012 committee and director of sales and marketing for Entek Extruders, laid out where the triennial show stood on March 22 with just over a year until it starts to members of the Society of the Plastics Industry's (SPI) Equipment Council meeting. The council was gathered in Scottsdale, AZ from March 21-23 at the Westin Kierland resort for SPI's Spring 2011 National Board Conference.

From left to right, John Effmann, Bill Carteaux, and Gene Sanders look at the NPE2012 floor plan during the event's space draw held this January in Orlando.

Effmann told the equipment council that the show was already at 98% of 2009 event levels in terms of floor coverage, with a budgeted space of 825,000-ft2 and a sales goal of 900,000-ft2. Gene Sanders, SPI's senior VP trade shows, told the group that because of demand, SPI had formally begun selling space in the North Hall at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL, in addition to the West and South halls.

Effmann said that eight blocks of hotel rooms slotted for exhibitors were already sold out, with SPI working to add blocks at around six more hotels. Effmann also acknowledged that given the preponderance of vacation rentals so near Walt Disney World, many were striking out on their own and securing good lodging deals for the show.

More than 650 exhibiting companies traveled to the Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel & Conference Center in Orlando from Jan. 12-14 for the NPE2012 space draw. The participating companies, combined with others that had made their choices in 2010 at a special pre-drawing, contracted for 664,525-ft2 of exhibit space. At that time, with 14 months to go before NPE2012, the total number of reserved square feet was equal to 87% of the final on-site total occupied at NPE2009. By the time the drawing finished on Jan. 14, 758 exhibitors had signed on.

NPE2012 not only shifts sites next year, moving from a decades-long run in Chicago and McCormick Place to Orlando and the Orange County Convention Center, but it is also changing dates as well, switching from its traditional June timeframe to April, with the event to be held from April 1-5, 2012.

Plastics plays ball, plans business strategies

Plastics in Sports will be a theme at NPE2012, according to Effmann, with floor areas and interactive exhibits that highlight plastics role within athletics planned throughout the south and west halls. These will include contact sports (baseball, football, and hockey), as well as areas set aside for playing surfaces, sportswear, and motor sports. The sports theme will also get a boost from some fortuitous timing, with the NCAA men's basketball Final Four to conclude with the championship game on the opening Monday night of the show, April 2. SPI is planning a Final Four party to mark the game.

NPE2012 will once again feature technology pavilions for visitors, with special areas for moldmaking, processors, emerging technologies, advanced manufacturing, thermoforming, and the design competition. Effmann noted that in 2009, the design competition ultimately received 10,000 votes in the People's Choice category, a strong reflection of its popularity with show goers.

The South Hall will also feature a Business of Plastics Center with individuals and companies present to complement the Business of Plastics conference that will begin with a keynote presentation on Sunday, April 1 and be followed by half-day sessions on Monday through Thursday.
