Aluminum to Plastic for a Jaguar Manifold

Siemens Automotive, in conjunction with Jaguar, has produced a plastic air/fuel manifold that incorporates two fuel passages into the body of the intake manifold for the new high-performance AJV8 engine incorporated into Jaguar's new XK8 sports model. The new manifold represents Jaguar's first transition from aluminum to a plastic intake manifold for any of its engines.

Due to the natural thermal properties of plastic, the manifold maintains cooler running temperatures, which allows for a greater density of air, therefore increasing the air flow through the manifold into the engine for higher performance. The Jaguar manifold features fuel passages moulded into the manifold body instead of a discrete fuel rail bolted on the outside of the manifold.

"By integrating components like the fuel rail into the body of the manifold, we are not only reducing weight, space, and assembly steps," explains George Perry, Siemens president and CEO, "but we are also eliminating fasteners and inserts that were previously required to bolt components to the manifold. That translates to further reductions in material complexity and cost." Siemens will mould the part out of a 35 percent glass-reinforced grade of BASF nylon 6/6 at its Telfor, U.K. facility using the lost-core moulding technique. "In the case of Jaguar, the lost-core method was preferred over the vibration welded manufacturing process in order to overcome some of the design challenges presented by the complex runner angles in the manifold itself," says Perry.
