South Korean pipe manufacturer Hyundai Pipe Co., Ltd. (Sang Ju City) has ordered a solEX 120-40 single-screw extruder, helix VSI-T+ pipe head with active intensive melt cooling and vacuum tank from battenfeld-cincinnati (Vienna) for the extrusion of solid-wall polyolefin pipes in diameters up to 2.6 m. The system is designed for the extrusion of large-diameter pipes used in applications such as transporting water in power stations. Hyundai Pipe plans to have the system installed by Q4 2015.

Battenfeld-cincinnati sells 2.6-meter-pipe extrusion system to Hyundai Pipe

One of the five largest manufacturers of pipes in South Korea, Hyundai Pipe currently produces pipes in dimensions ranging from 100 to 1,500 mm for transporting fresh and waste water and for applications in the petrochemical industry. The company, which is certified according to DIN ISO 9001 and 14001, supplies both multinationals, such as ExxonMobil and Shell, as well as small companies. Hyundai Pipe has eight extrusion lines achieving a production capacity of 22,000 tonnes per year; the new line will be the fourth that it has purchased from battenfeld-cincinnati.

"The quality of HDPE pipes has already been proven, but there are still some parts of the market that do not see the advantages," said Cho Sun Jae, President of Hyundai Pipe, in a prepared statement. "Therefore, it is our responsibility to produce a good product and help it gain acceptance in the market." The company chose to work with battenfeld-cincinnati again, he added, because of its past positive experience and its know-how in large-diameter pipe extrusion.

To extrude large-diameter pipes, plasticizing capacity is critical, notes battenfeld-cincinnati in a news release. The solEX 120-40 extruder achieves an output of 2,200 kg/h and processing length of 40 D. The associated tooling ensures minimal ovality and sagging, particularly in thick walls measuring more than 100 mm. The helix VSI-T+ system ensures low pressure build-up and operation independent of viscosity thanks to the proven combination of a spiral mandrel for initial melt distribution and a compact lattice basket for fine dispersion. An internal air cooling system allows high line speeds and pipe quality. It also results in a shortened cooling section and, thus, a shorter total line length, which was also very important for Hyundai Pipe, according to battenfeld-cincinnati.
