Bemis Company Inc. (Neenah, WI) has received all necessary reviews and approvals from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA), clearing the way for it to sell its FreshCase film for fresh beef packaging applications. Kristine Pavletich, public relations specialist at Bemis, could not tell PlasticsToday the materials applied or the structure of the proprietary new film, but did say some smaller customers in Mexico and Brazil are moving forward with commercialization of products utilizing the technology.

Bemis said the film extends shelf life compared to most fresh-beef packaging formats, which reduces food waste throughout the distribution cycle and improves inventory management for customers and retailers. In addition, this freezer-ready vacuum package reportedly uses less material than alternatives, which decreases shipping costs while increasing efficient use of retail shelf space.

Pavletich said the product will run on existing manufacturing equipment, with work initially focused within Wisconsin. Bemis acknowledges that many customers will have to make modifications to their existing packaging lines to accommodate a new vacuum packaging format, and because of this, Bemis does not expect "meaningful commercial sales" to start until 2011. Pavletich said the original technology was developed over three years ago in January 2007. —[email protected]
