The scientist leading plastics developments at one of Korea's leading conglomerates has agreed to be a plenary speaker at next week's ANTEC 2011 conference. Soo Myung Choi, vice president, R&D business labs, for Hyosung Corp., will be a plenary speaker at ANTEC 2011. Choi will speak on Monday, May 2, in a presentation titled, "Carbon Nanotubes, Electrospinning and Aliphatic Polyketones."

Hyosung's Soo Myung Choi will share his insights with ANTEC attendees.

Choi replaces Samsung's Young Kim, who was previously scheduled to speak but will be unable to attend. Hyosung is a conglomerate active in fibers, textiles, power systems, green energy, trading and chemicals, industrial machinery and more. ANTEC is the annual technology conference organized by the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE); this year the event will be held May 1-5 at the Hynes Convention Center and the Boston Marriott Copley Center Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts.

Choi's presentation will address the following projects:

  • Plastics filled with electrically conductive carbon nanotubes are used in the electronics and automotive industries in applications such as antistatic and electrostatic discharge materials and vehicle body panels for the electrostatic painting process. The addition of carbon nanotubes is expected to enhance the thermal conductivity in thermal management materials for heat dissipation. Here you can read some of our recent coverage of CNT

  • Choi will talk about electrospinning technology, which can be used to add value to multi-functional webs with antibacterial properties, UV-detecting and gas-sensing capabilities, high conductivity and high thermal resistance.

  • Aliphatic polyketones are semi-crystalline thermoplastics obtained from the copolymerization of CO and olefins. The polyketones have high tensile strength, high impact strength, high resilience, outstanding chemical resistance and hydrolytic stability, and good tribological properties. These properties make them suitable for engineering thermoplastics and high modulus industrial or technical fibers.

Choi joined Hyosung R&D Center in February 1980 and is now in charge of the APK team as VP.  He received his bachelors, masters and PhD degrees from Seoul National University.
