Engel symposium draws a (big) crowd

Held May 27-28, Engel’s Symposium this year at its large machine manufacturing plant in St. Valentin, Austria was its largest ever in spite of the current market dynamics, or possibly as a result of them as processors even more actively seek out the means to beat their competition. The Symposium served as a forum for the company, headquartered in Schwertberg (also Austria), to show off some of its latest technology, including a machine designed for its Clearmelt process, which takes advantage of a sliding table to inject transparent polyurethane over a thermoplastic carrier. The line molded automotive door trim during the open house.

Compared to established approaches such as multiple layer coating, the Clearmelt setup offers better productivity and thinner layers, claims Engel. Working with the machine manufacturer on development were Schöfer (also in Schwertberg), the injection molder and mold manufacturer, along with Hennecke (PUR machine manufacturer), Votteler (coatings supplier), Burg Design (decorative trim film converter), and plastics supplier Bayer for the thermoplastic carrier material. Schöfer and Burg Design also teamed up in 2007 to win the SPE’s Automotive Div. award for best interior part.

Engel also turned the light on “onyx,” the name given to its new carbide coating for screws that Engel says improves the coating toughness by 300%, based on drop hammer impact tests. Also significant, says Engel, is the improvement in the bonding force between the coating and the steel screw. While standard HVOF (high-velocity oxygen fuel) coatings achieve bonding levels of 90-110 MPa, the onyx coating system achieves bonding values of 250-350 MPa. The onyx-brand screws are available in sizes from 25-70 mm in diameter. [email protected]
