Avoiding the impact to mechanical performance that can occur from eliminating halogen content in flame-retardant polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), SABIC Innovative Plastics (Pittsfield, MA) has launched three new additions to its Valox ENH family of resins that it says deliver advanced flame retardance (FR), as well as mechanical and electrical performance, to the electrical and electronics (E/E) industry. Global environmental regulations, including the European Union (EU) Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive, which is now also being applied in Korea and China, are forcing electronics OEMs to move away from brominated, chlorinated FR chemistries.
SABIC says the three Valox ENH PBTs (ENH 3500, unfilled; ENH 4530, 15% glass fiber; ENH 4560, 30% glass fiber) deliver

excellent elongation, chemical resistance, and impact properties, while offering better electrical and flammability performance than brominated FR grades. The three new Valox ENH resins meet the UL94 V0 standard at 0.8 mm, and with a comparative tracking index (CTI) of 500 volts for Valox ENH 4530 resin and a CTI of 600 volts for Valox ENH 3500 and Valox ENH 4560 resins, the grades surpass the CTI performance of standard glass-filled brominated PBT, which is typically around 200 volts. The supplier notes that these unfilled and glass-filled grades have potential for use in electric cooling fans, relays, connectors, switches, and fuser applications in printers. The Valox ENH resin portfolio now has five commercial grades applicable to many different E/E applications currently made of brominated FR PBT and/or polyethylene terephthalate (PET). SABIC is also planning to launch PBT/PET alloys within the Valox ENH resin family by the end of this year. The company will be exhibiting at K 2010 in Düsseldorf, Germany from Hall 6, Stand D42. —[email protected]
