Frimo Inc. is opening a new $5 million technology center within its North American headquarters in Wixom, MI, with that site joining four such facilities in Europe. Fully operational in September, the tech center will feature tooling and production facilities for a range of polyurethane-based processes used for automotive interior products like instrument panels, door trim, consoles, headliners, seats, headrests and more.

Technologies on site will include rapid prototyping, polyurethane processing, thermoforming, laminating, and edgefolding, as well as flexible trimming, scoring, punching, and joining/adhesive bonding of plastics.

On-site equipment includes a PUReLine polyurethane spray system, as well as rigid and semi-flexible PUR foam-in-place metering equipment and tooling. Post molding, there is a FlexTrim router and fixturing; invisible airbag scoring equipment and fixturing; EcoForm and VarioForm thermoforming machinery and tooling; and JoinLine infrared-welding equipment. The center also has two trial test bays for customers to run pre-production prototypes.

The TechCenter will managed by Lee Hodson, who recently joined Frimo as director of advanced development. It is staffed by 15 engineers, process technicians, and customer support personnel. The Wixom site, which opened in 1990, covers 60,000 ft2, with the tech center occupying 20,000 of that. Frimo recently expanded its Lotte, Germany tech center, making that site its largest in Europe. Another facility is under construction at the Frimo site in Shanghai. Frimo was founded in Bohmte, Germany in 1962 as Fritsche Moellmann GmbH & Co. KG, providing foam tools for the PUR-processing. Today the company has 15 locations and 1200 employees. —[email protected]
