Honda Manufacturing of Indiana’s (Greensburg, IN) plant has ramped up to full single-shift production, shipping Honda Civics on Sept. 21 for sale into Mexico and export to 22 Latin American and Caribbean nations and U.S. territories. In-house operations at the site, which is located roughly halfway between Indianapolis and Cincinnati on I-74, include injection molding, metal stamping, painting, subassembly, and final assembly.

Edward K. Miller, senior manager corporate affairs & communications at Honda told Plastics Today that the Greensburg site, as is the case with vehicle assembly plants in Ohio, Alabama, and Ontario, molds instrument panel (IP) covers and structures, as well as front and rear bumper fascia. The IP components are then moved to a subassembly area, where Honda associates build the instrument panels for the gasoline-powered Honda Civic and natural gas-powered Honda Civic GX.

“At Honda, we engineer and build many of our own tools, dies, machinery and equipment, which sets us apart from other companies,” Miller said. “Those items that we don’t make in-house come from supplier companies, with whom we work closely so that the items perform to Honda specs.” Miller said a lot of the equipment is purchased off-the-shelf by Honda but then customized or modified for use by Honda associates.

In a release, Yuzo Uenohara, president of Honda Manufacturing of Indiana (HMIN) LLC,  said, “We designed our Greensburg plant to be world class, and thanks to the spirit and quality work of our Indiana associates, we will soon be proving it around the globe.” Prior to Sept. 21, the more than 50,000 Civics built at the Greensburg plant had been sold exclusively in the U.S. In May, Honda announced that the Greensburg plant had become the sole production source of the natural gas-powered Honda Civic GX Sedan. The facility has now ramped up to full single-shift production. —Tony Deligio
