IBM showcases digital health à la française

Our LinkedIn friends at MEDTEC France recently shared an article published by L'Usine Digitale on how IBM France is inventing e-health. If you're fluent in French, it's worth a a few minutes of your time. For the rest of us, here are some highlights from the article.

There are many reasons to visit Nice, France, but one that might not immediately spring to mind is a visit to IBM in nearby La Gaude. Grande erreur, if you believe journalist Gaëlle Fleitour. In operation since 1961, the site has evolved into one of two global IBM facilities—the other is in Dallas—designed to showcase transformative technologies.

Digital health plays a starring role here. A room equipped with multiple sensors is designed to help seniors remain in their residence, secure in the knowledge that, should anything happen, sensors will relay an alert to appropriate personnel. The technology is being rolled out in 1800 apartments in Italy, with IBM providing the software and consultation services.

IBM's La Gaude facility also contains mockups of a hospital room, surgery suite, and doctor's office to demonstrate the value of interconnectivity. The patient, for example, has a tablet that displays information about his or her condition. Meanwhile, another screen in the room detects the presence of a nurse and immediately displays patient information and what the nurse needs to do. The doctor, meanwhile, can follow the patient's progress remotely on his or her connected screen. The doctor's office also is equipped with connected medical devices that allow him or her to conduct patient examinations in remote consultation with a specialist, if needed.

Finland has expressed interest in the technology, according to L'Usine Digitale.
