The new materials are an extension of the Carbothane line of polycarbonate-based thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) and include a range of grades and radiopacities.(Lubrizol will be holding an educational lunch session on these materials for MD&M West attendees).

According to Lubrizol, aromatic Carbothane TPU features stronger material, improved chemical resistance and increased resistance to creep compared to other plastics used for comparable medical applications, such as catheters and other devices used in the body for more than 30 days. Other targets include permanent implants used in spinal and orthopedic applications.

"These aromatic products are an important addition to the Carbothane family of polycarbonate-based TPUs," said Ralf Hüther, global business manager of Lubrizol LifeScience Polymers. "Customers who are looking for a product with notable material strength and enhanced chemical resistance will find aromatic Carbothane an attractive option, especially for implantable devices that are designed to remain in the body for long periods of time."

The new aromatic TPU is available in four clear grades and four radiopaque grades, which include a 20% loading of barium sulfate.  They meet required regulatory criteria.

At MD&M West 2012, Lubrizol, newly acquired by Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway, announced an increased focus on the healthcare field and creation of the LifeScience Polymers group. Development of additional polymers, such as new chemistries for bioresorbable polymers was identified as a key strategy.

Founded in 1928, Lubrizol has approximately 7,000 employees worldwide. Revenues for 2011 were $6.1 billion.
